Tokusatsu mockumentary Taroman is looking to get a film release later this year. Titled Taroman: Expo Explosion, the run time for the feature is still unknown but a trailer for the coming film has been released on the Asmik Ace Youtube Channel. The film is scheduled for release on the 22nd of August.
The Taroman series is a collection of short episodes of a fake tokusatsu show from the 1970s, inspired by the art of legendary artist Taro Okamoto. Each episode has a traditional Kaiju attack on the city as Taroman comes to save the day. Taroman and the attacking kaiju are all based on artworks from Okamoto and each episode has a segment interview as if discussing the series in the modern day.
The most interesting aspect of the Taroman series is that
each episode’s events focus on artistic expression. Not just a basic fist
fight, Taroman will take part in absurdist posing to defeat enemies or use the
enemy as a drum set. The goal of each seems focused on helping viewers
understand art and encourage personal expression, however that may come out. The documentary segments at the end are playfully pretending the series genuinely aired but serve to explain the themes of each episode and encourage artistic expression.
The series commitment to the false 1970’s history has led to the creation of toys, books and an exhibition for the fictional series. The movie will be releasing nationwide in Japan.
